Tb home-test biological matter content, the Solvita kit is great. Simple and easy to use, this kit gives tests for both garden soil and compost. Seeds of Change (888-7627333) and Johnny’s Selected Seeds (207-437-4301) sell this product. Tests for NPK ratio are also available (LaMotte’s is the most reliable) from many catalogs and garden centers, but they aren’t as accurate as professional tests.
The most comprehensive tests I know of, for the most detail conscious gardeners, can be done through Dr. Elaine Ingham’s labs (see: www.soilfoodweb.com). With all of these tests, follow the instructions for preparing soil samples precisely to obtain the best results.
Next, having gathered the information on your soil’s specific excesses or deficiencies, youll need further information on what might be added to your soil to correct any problems. If you don’t know the square footage of your garden, measure it and keep that handy for gauging amounts of amendments.
