struck by lightning last Wednesday. The electric charge ignited the entire structure and in 15 minutes the building caved in. Efforts of firemen saved nearby structures. Severe electrical storms have occurred in the area almost daily for the past ten days.
In a photo, Bill Lyne was cutting the grass at the Recreation Center outside Washington as he donates his time to community service. So far, his volunteer efforts have resulted in a $200 repair bill on his lawn mower incurred from running over bottles, trash and rocks.
Vincent “Pops” Aylor of Washington was fishing with his grandfather on Saturday in the North Fork of the Shenandoah River and caught a seven and one-half pound catfish which measured 27 inches in length.
It was the week of the “melons”, Eddie and Mike Wayland grew giant melons in the family garden. Mike’s cantaloupe weighed 20 pounds, 13 ounces and Eddie’s watermelon weighed 34 pounds. The children were pictured with their prize possessions.
The Circus Kirk, sponsored by the Washington Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, will hold a one night stand at the Washington carnival grounds on Sept. 16.
The circus is operated entirely by high school and college students, who are also the performers and many of these young people develop permanent careers in circus performances.
