Clean-up Day
All residents should participate
In Rappahannock County, 18 groups and/or individuals
have agreed to clean-up over 49 miles of roadway
and all groups are requested to do their part on Saturday, Sept. 14.
On that day, volunteers across Virginia will join an international effort to rid roads of trash when Adopta-Highway holds its Great State Trash-Off in conjunction with the first International Adopt-a-Highway Clean-up Day.
It appears that every road in Rappahannock could use a cleaning and all citizens are encouraged to participate in this day.
Perhaps you are not a part of any group that has an Adopt-a-Highway sign; however, you could certainly participate by cleaning up that stretch directly in front of your property.
Virginia has one of the largest Adopt-a-Highway programs in the United States with over 6,700 volunteer groups. Those participating in such endeavors show pride in their communities by volunteering to pick up litter along a two-mile stretch of roadway four times each year for two years. In return these groups are provided with safety vests, orange bags and road signs recognizing their efforts either by group name or by an individual.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation the program is going global. They encourage motorist to watch for orange-vested volunteers on Sept. 14. According to VDOT over one million volunteers participate in this program.
We encourage Rappahannock residents to participate on this day so our roads can be clean before the fall tourist season reaches the county.
Local VDOT authorities will provide bags and vests, just give Superintendent Ennis Jenkins a call at 675-3612. Also let Superintendent Jenkins know the location of your trash cleanup efforts between 7:30 and 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16 for bag removal that day.
