When Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke received two recent inquiries about the presence of convicted sex’** offenders in Rappahannock County, he felt it was time to let residents, especially parents, know that there is a Web site which lists these offenders throughout the state.
The Web site, run by the Virginia State Police, shows that Rappahannock County and its neighboring counties are not immune from the sort of crime that appears on the front pages of the nation s big city newspapers.
In the case of Rappahannock, it lists five convicted sex offenders currently living here: one in the Town of Washington, one in Huntly, two in Amissville and one in Chester Gap.
The state police Internet site, which has had 20,675,837 search requests since 1998, contains a state-wide sex offender registry by county, town and zip code.
Each sex offender registered on the Virginia Web site has a color photograph, name, age, address, list of physical characteristics, date of conviction and type of sexual crime.
"It is a way of informing the public of these potentially dangerous criminals in this community," said Mr. Luke, explaining the registry in an interview this week. "The community can be warned if there are sex offenders that are here and take appropriate steps to protect their children."
