I his week we received two letters from readers complaining about our coverage of this case. As a newspaper, we would have been derelict not to have reported it. There is also another issue: our responsibility as a community to protect our children.
In this week's paper, we have a story about five known sex offenders living here in Rappahannock. It's time we as citizens are made aware of these cases.
Have we not covered court cases, drug dealers, intoxicated drivers, etc., as much as we perhaps should have in the past? Yes, and we openly admit that shortcoming. However, we now are taking a closer look at the criminal justice system in Rappahannock County, including crime, the courts and sheriff s office — and covering stories that stem from there.
Many things occur in Rappahannock that we don’t know about. However, when we are made aware of cases in which children are victims of sex offenders it gets our attention. We cannot apologize for our actions when our Rappahannock children are in danger.
