Windsor chair, and a child’s antique high chair add to the elegant atmosphere. A monkey chandelier helps give the room its “Monkey Room” name. And the next room, the “bird” room is decorated with a series of pictures from the Kevis’s home in Wilton, Conn.
A new kitchen provides every amenity, while still contributing to the period atmosphere. Every attempt was made to use the old materials from renovated spaces in the new areas, so that old floor joists became beams in the new kitchen ceding, and old ceilings were used as paneling in the new hallways and stairways.
Up the new “crow” stairway and in the upstairs hall, pictures, sculptures, and poems about crows adorn the walls, shelves and furnishings. In the master bedroom, a modem reproduction of a pencil post high bed stands out among Mrs. Kevis’ grandmother’s desk and antique dressers. Black and white toile bedding and wallpaper decorate the room; the new bathroom, which was once a porch, carries out the black and white color scheme.
A small reading room, once a bedroom with a fireplace, completes the master suite.
The renovated home, very elegant and comfortable, reflects the long life and good taste of the Kevis couple, and will, with good luck, last into its fourth century, combining the past and present as it has for the past 250 years. It is an important part of Washington, Va’s heritage, and a delightful addition to the many architectural jewels.of the town.
