Steven Kenny has proven with his illustrator's tools of brush and paint that he can paint anything that comes to his fertile mind—real or imagined— and make us believe in it and marvel. In the last several years he has been stretching himself with these same tools to create fine art; not as an illustrator but as a painter.
His sensitive use of richly colored hues and an imaginative weaving of natural elements from the animal and plant kingdoms within and around the human figure are well-developed characteristics of all his work to date.
His present showing of work at the Middle Street Gallery reveals as looser approach in his handling of paint than has been seen before. Without weakening the solidity of the figure or objects, the paint is given a life of its own but remains clearly connected to Kenny's articulate understanding of forms. From this firm place he plays out his ideas for us to see. Each painting is like an intentionally lit stage, set to present an image that will offer a combination of figure and carefully chosen objects
