School budget hearing
The Board of Supervisors agreed to hold a hearing on the school budget at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 28, in the high school auditorium.
Acting School Superintendent Helen Williams introduced the budget noting that an increase of nearly $920,000 in the local contribution in the proposed $9.7 million budget was attributable to required increases in four categories: employee salaries and benefits, infrastructure improvements, safety-related purchases, and technology upgrading.
Williams said the budget includes $390,000 for a five percent salary increase for most employees so that the school system can maintain "parity" with surrounding jurisdictions and another $244,000 to cover estimated increases in health insurance costs.
She added that the School Board had approved $150,000 in funding for all infrastructure improvements that had been removed from last year's budget.
Those improvements include "rewiring of the old wing of the elementary school, replacing a 1967 boiler at the same school, improving science rooms in both schools, and continuing the replacement of carpet with tile."
