7,500 on the Federal side and 9,500 on the Rebel side, were to clash on the heights overlooking Brandy Station, in a day of fierce, bloody, and fateful fighting.
Local Civil War historian Joseph McKinney, who lives at Brandy Station and is at work on a book about the battle, contends that early in the engagement the actions of the 6th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, which was part of Brigadier General William “Grumble” Jones’ brigade, played a decisive role in the battle’s outcome.
The 6th Virginia was comprised of companies recruited from the local area including Rappahannock, Clarke, Fauquier and Loudoun^ counties. .
McKinney will discuss the effect of the 6th Virginia on the battle, the see-saw nature of the conflict, and the outcome of the battle at the next meeting of the Blue Ridge Civil War Round Table, which is Tuesday, April 15 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
The meeting is at the Old Sperryville Book Shop, at 44 Main Street in Spqfgyville. The public is welcome to attend at no charge. Everyone is also welcome to arrive around 7 p.m. to enjoy snacks and to socialize.
A West Point graduate, McKinney served 24 years as an infantry officer, with tours as a platoon leader in Vietnam, a tactics instructor at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, and a staff officer in the. Pentagon.
