Applauding the success of last year’s freshman team and the opportunities that provided for 35 young men to participate in a sport in the fall, Mello thanked the community for raising the $29,000 it took to purchase uniforms and the goal posts last year. He asked that they help purchase uniforms for the second team starting up this fall with 30 more athletes.
“I cannot tell you how much enthusiasm football has generated in our school, not only for the football players themselves, but for the band, and the cheerleading squad,” said Mello.
Jones asked the crowd to pledge financial support to outfit the second team. He said that $8,000 had already been raised, and an additional $12,000 was needed. In a little over five minutes, he was able to solicit $5,500 in pledges, ranging from $25 to $1,000.
