This decline in the population was typical in many rural communities in the U.S. during the first half of the 20th century, as people left rural agricultural areas and moved to urban centers.
The population increase during 1970 to 2000 in Rappahannock County likely reflects severed factors: the general increase in the U.S. population; migration of retirees to live in this county’s rural environment; and movement to the county of employed adults who wanted to live here and either work here or who were more easily able to commute to urban and suburban work centers than in the past.
