Fantaci said that “being herself" is what is most important for a young woman competing in the pageant. Points are given for personality and projection, poise and gesture, and attire.

“What (the three to five judges are) looking for is not the painted-on smile and the trained answers, but someone who can represent the county, especially for (the title of) ‘Miss Rappahannock’,” she said.

“It’s not about the perfect body or makeup. They look at each person as a whole. They look for the inner beauty and everybody who looks like they’re having fun.”

One of the most important parts of the pageant for “Miss Rappahannock” contestants is answering one of three questions on stage.
