Gid recalled the “evaporator”, the name everyone used when talking about the apple drying business that used to operate at the site where the rescue squad is located today. The apples were peeled, sliced, and dried at that location. Gid’s mother werked there, turning apples by hand to dry them, since they didn’t have machines back then to do the job. He also remembered the old packing house and the juice plant that used to be next to it that canned and bottled apple juice for “Red Cheek” and also produced “Skyland Brand.”
