GRAVESTONE
CARVING Prior to the industrial age. gravestone carv ing was a fine art practiced by the highly skilled. If you are fortunate enough to walk through New England's earliest graveyards, you may come to regard their gravestones as America’s earliest sculpture. As such, they are worths of study as important sociological, historical, archaeological, religious, and artistic pieces. They survive as oated artifacts that have, for the most part, remained in their original locations. Their lettering styles we influenced by the script found on Roman monuments. Skilled gravestone carvers shaped the letters to varying widths to best exemplify the written legend. Thus, this early form of American sculpture w as influenced by sculptors who preceded them by seventeen centuries.
