Whether or ndt to pave the mostly gravel Gnmsley Road 'Route 638 near Flint Hill), much of which serves as a dividing line between supervisor Roger Welch's Wakefield District and Ron Frazier’s Jackson District, has been a controversial one since it surfaced last October.
In a compromise that pleased neither Grimsley Road residents Harry and Nancy Newlin. who requested that the whole length be paved, nor some 23 other residents, including Caulfield, opposed to any paving, the Board of Supervisors voted, 3-2, in December 2003 to pave only a short section: the three-tenths of a mile from the existing tarand-chip surface to the end of the Newlin’s property.
Estes, Frazier, and Hampton District supervisor Bryant Lee voted to pave. Welch and Stonewall-Hawthome district supervisor Bob Anderson were opposed.
Grimsley Road residents opposed to paving have been vocal and active in the months since the vote, most recently collecting some 300 signatures on a petition circulated around the county and presented at the October Board of Supervisor’s meeting.
