Younger children and older adults have a higher risk of dying in a home fire. Most people who die in house fires are not in the room where the fire starts.
In Virginia, a new fire occurs about once every fifteen minutes. Each year, fire kills an average of 100 men, women and children in Virginia and injures or disfigures many more. Fire causes more than $2.5 million in property loss each week in Virginia.
“It’s about preventative maintenance,” said Adam Thiel, executive director of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. “You take care of your smoke detector and it helps to protect your and your family.”
