Vandalism to the road signs also was a hot topic recently on Rappnet. Demaris Miller reported that someone had stolen her first Bush/Cheney sign, and destroyed the replacement which, she said, was ripped to shreds and impaled on a fence post.
“It is really sad when people let anger get the best of them and destroy the property of others because they disagree with their views,” said Miller.
Party chairmen
Robert Amos, chairman of the Rappahannock County Republican Party, said, “I can’t imagine any conscionable adult, Democrat or Republican, going out and doing this.We’re going to work together with the Democrats to see that it doesn’t happen anymore.”
Floyd Stilley, chairman of the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee, noted that “local political organizations don’t have a lot of money and these signs are expensive.”
He went on to say that “it’s not the signs that are important, but that people are informed and can make the right choice for themselves on Election Day.”
Stilley said that as a goodwill gesture, he planned to purchase more Bush/Cheney signs to offer as replacements to the ones lost by local Republicans. He also suggested that all incidents of theft or defacement be reported.
