This is a substantial decrease from 1963, which was one of the worst years for forest fires in the history of the Division of Forestry. In 1963, 545 forest fires burned 9,511 acres in the district.

The Rappahannock News’ Man of the Year for 1979 is Herbert S. Barksdale of Flint Hill. Barksdale is 80 this year, long past the age when most folks have retired to the old porch rocker, but he is still going a mile a minute. “He is one of the most civic minded individuals I have ever met,” said local attorney James W. Fletcher Barksdale serves on a multitude of boards and organizations. In Flint Hill, he is president of the fire and rescue squad and has been since 1954 when the group was first formed. He is also very active in his church, Flint Hill Methodist. He is chairman of the administrative board, church treasurer and member of umpteen different committees.
