Mary Ann Kuhn’s departure
as editor of the Rappahannock News reminds me of a conversation I had with her shortly after she took over the job.
Recalling my 10 years as editor of The Des Moines Register in Iowa, I told her that being the top editor of any newspaper is a lonely job. ' You will be surrounded by people, of course—the people you serve in the community and the people who work for you— but you also must maintain a certain detachment or distance from them all in order to do the sometimes tough things an editor is called upon to do.
