Kansas, said the job of a newspaper “is to tell the truth and raise hell.” Both will upset people. It’s not the mission of the newspaper to make everyone feel good, but to report truthfully in the news columns and—when necessary—“raise hell” in the editorial columns.
So, Mary Ann, thanks for .doing the lonely job and taking the heat. Good luck in the new job, where you may enjoy the luxury of a bit more anonymity. I urge everyone to welcome the new editor, Anita Sherman, with the understanding that she’s taking on one of the toughest but most important jobs in the county.
