Police with a 150-MHz system that can be accessed by 800-MHz portable equipment.
The STARS system would enable a police officer to communicate with their vehicle by an 800-MHz handheld radio, which would in turn be transmitted to the state system by 150-MHz.
The advantage of this system is that the user would have 800-MHz capacity without the need for line of sight signals from the vehicle to the transmitter.
Another advantage is that during major disasters, STARS makes communication with surrounding areas readily available.
While STARS would not charge the county to be added to their network, there would be a charge per unit on an annual basis for the use of the 150-MHz frequencies.
This cost would be nominal, but statewide implementation of STARS is not slated until 2008 in this part of the state.
