body. Later I met the owner and then I went home, and after a really bad week, Lwrote to him to say that if these two dogs ever had pups, I’d like to buy one of them.
“He wrote back to say that all the puppies were spoken for for the next tw'o years, and besides, he said that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and he might not be there.
“I didn’t hear from him for a long time, and then, one Friday night when it had been raining for three days, I got a call from him. ‘I just wanted you to know that I’m still here, and I have one puppy here. I’m not sure it’s going to be a good working dog because it wasn’t planned, and the man who was going to take him backed out at the last minute. So, if you’re interested, I’ll keep him for you through the weekend.’ ”
Pursche called a friend and together they drove nine hours, through the rain, to Scranton, Pa., to look at this puppy. It was a grandson of one of the two dogs he had seen and liked so well before.
He bought it on the spot, and then his life changed.
“I came home and called my partners and said, This is not working.’ There was something wrong with my life if I could be successful and couldn’t have a dog. I decided then that my work was going to have to fit into my life, not my life fit around my work.” '
