The easement was granted to the VOF, an agency of the state charged with preserving the natural, scenic, historic, open space, and recreational areas of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
VOF was created in 1966 by Virginia’s General Assembly. Since its inception, VOF has been granted easements on over 259,937 acres of land in Virginia.
In Rappahannock County alone, VOF has protected over 17,955 acres of land since 1974. With the recordation of Ben Venue and other year-end transactions Rappahannock may achieve a milestone of having over 20,000 acres in VOF easements, representing almost 15 percent of all privately owned land in the county.
Rappahannock County Administrator John McCarthy lauded Mrs. Eastham’s dedication to the land and rural heritage of Virginia.
“The Ben Venue easement is possibly the most significant easement project to be completed in Rappahannock County,^ said McCarthy. “The preservation of this land for future generations is essential for maintaining the agricultural base, scenic beauty and quality of life in Rappahannock County,”
“The Eastham family’s donation is truly extraordinary, and I hope, a shining example to others,” he added.
