Governor’s School students would require more work . because all the students are so excellent.
This year is definitely a planning year for the Governor’s School which would ultimately serve students in Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Frederick, Rappahannock, Warren, and Winchester City.
In addition to planning for a Governor’s School, Mills said there was much excitement about work being done on the facilities this year.
“Right now the students don’t have the caliber of facilities that other schools offer,” said Mills.
Mills does not anticipate any major jumps in overall student enrollment.
“The school population is very stable. Based on the economics of the county it is possible that the population will actually go down,” said Mills who explained that because of zoning and the high cost of land in the county the growth of young families is really strapped.
“Young people cannot buy land in this area and so it is difficult for them to start families here.”
Mills also commented on the impact of Bob Chappell in the school community.
“Bob’s personality and leadership have really over flowed into the system. Morale is high and we have a wonderful staff and I hope it continues.”
Mills went on to say that he felt it was a very good time in the history of the school and that there are some teachers whose classes have had very high SOL marks.
“Things are small, simple, and safe. We are really in touch with the;, education of our youth. It’s not like running a big business. We are a very manageable and personal system. Our goal is to make our students exit well,’'"
