Trained in London, Vemikos held academic appointments at Stanford Universicy, Wright State University School of Medicine and was a visiting professor at the University of London.
Vemikos has published over 200 scientific papers and reviews, holds three patents, has served on editorial boards of scientific journals and was associate editor of Pharmacological Reviews. She is a recognized leader in the field of stress management and coping, and a pioneer of space medicine. Her extensive research led to her discovery of a revolutionary link between gravity and healthy aging.
She also led the ground research that developed the framework for understanding how spaceflight and earth’s gravity affect the human body. She was the first to carry out head-down bed-rest studies in women and compare the changes in fluid and electrolyte regulation and their post bed-rest orthostatic response to that of men.
