Estes attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute until 1956, when he was drafted into the Army, where he was a tank maintenance instructor.
He returned to Sperryville with his wife Betty. They began their family, and he opened a wrecking yard business.
Estes’ introduction to local government was the decade from 1962-1972 when he served Rappahannock County as sheriff.
During that time, one of the requirements of the office of sheriff was to be a representative on the Board of Zoning Appeals.
While living in Sperryville in the mid-1970s, a neighbor applied to the Board of Supervisors to begin a fish hide tannery business.
Estes researched the tanning process, and found that the chemicals used were known as cancercausing components.
He spoke against the tannery in a public forum, and this experience led him to become involved in county politics.
As for personal goals for this upcoming year, Estes looks forward to finishing restoration to the home he and his wife purchased in 1988 on the corner of Sperryville Pike, across from Thornton River Grille in Sperryville.
