about constructing a hot house. Hoop houses and cold frames are what she likes to work with and her hope is for people to realize how easy these are to put together. Once plants have overhead protection from too much wind and rain they are simply planted directly into the ground. “If it gets really cold and the plants freeze overnight they easily revive the next day,” explained LaPr6.
Surprisingly, taking care of a garden in the winter does not require a lot of time. All that needs to be done is a little bit of weeding and of course harvesting the vegetables.
“The initial set up is the only time-consuming part,” explained LaPre. Since there are fewer bugs in the winter gardeners do not have to spend a lot of time on pest control. LaPr6, herself, does not even kill the few insects she finds. Instead she harvests plants that attract what she describes as beneficial insects that kill the bugs causing harm to the crop. This is a subject on which she leads another workshop later in the year.
The meaning behind the workshop is teaching people about self-sufficiency and biodiversity. “Eating locally grown things is like eating your environment,” said LaPr6.
