1918 — A severe winter was followed by a very snowy spring that year. In April, there was an earthquake on the Skyline,, measuring by some accounts 6.5 on the Richter scale. The Gibsons’ Mill chimney is thought to have tumbled inward during the quake. People ran out in the streets, afraid for their lives.
There is a story told about a young man up in the park, grieving for his grandfather when the quake struck. A brick fell from the chimney, startling the boy. “What did I ever do to you, Granddaddy?,” said the boy.
