From Seattle, the movie moves through (he decades, tracing Charles’ move to Los Angeles, his years touring the Jim Crow South, his signing by Atlantic Records and his late-’50s breakthrough to find a personal style that merges gospel, rhythm and blues.
As he becomes more and more famous, the film also chronicles Charles’ dark side — his heroin addiction, his many infidelities to his long-suffering wife (Kerry Washington) and his back-stabbing of several of his most loyal friends and business associates. The film provides us with a seriously flawed Ray Charles whose selfishness — the hallmark of every great artist — is balanced by a good heart, a fearless spirit, a growing social consciousness and the fruits of his genius. But it’s also a highly inspirational drama about a brave man struggling with several devastating afflictions.
There are exhilarating renditions of more than a dozen Charles classics such as “Georgia,” “What’d I Say,” “1 Got a Woman,” “Mary Ann,” “Hit the Road Jack” and “Come Rain or Come Shine,” all sung by Charles. Ray Charles was quite a man. No matter what hardship came his way or how many mistakes he made, we can’t stop loving him.
The film is rated PG-13 for extensive drug use and sexual situations. Run time is 135 minutes.
