tive to take care of it and build a mutual relationship with it.”
LaPre also spreads the word about gardening by overseeing a section of books at the Rappahannock Library devoted to the subject.
Three or four years ago LaPre said she was feeling, “frustrated that we have all this land in Rappahannock and people aren’t farming it.” She wanted people to “take back their food power and know what they are eating.” So she went to the library with her concerns and a section was designated for books on gardening.
Little by little books on her wish list began coming in as people from the county heard about her idea and made donations. The section is now home to about two dozen books on the subject and LaPre reviews each book before it goes on the shelf to make sure it is up-to-date and relevant. She stresses that there are some truly cutting edge books out today that can teach people an enormous amount about gardening and eating locally grown foods.
Anyone interested in LaPre’s upcoming workshop, the gardening section at the library or gardening in general is welcome to contact her by e-mail at dopray@earthlink.net.
