Summer Brings New Concerns ffor Your
Landscape
Inspect trees and shrubs now to prevent damage this fall and winter. Some of the most damaging landscape pests become active as temperatures cool in the fal. For example, all hemlocks should be inspected for adelgids. The hemlock woolly adelgid has been dormant all summer, but wi soon resume feeding. Inspect all conifers for spider mites. The spruce spider mite is most damaging in the fall and spring.
An application of horticultural spray oil in the fall will reduce both mites and adelgids. This is also a good time to check for foliage deeases on landscape plants, such as dogwoods, crabapptes and cherries. If a wet spring and summer has caused leaf spots, mildew, and defoliation, plan a treatment program for next spring.
