A TMDL, or total maximum daily load, is the total amount of pollutant that a stream, lake, pond or other body of water can absorb and still meet applicable water quality standards. The MDL is part of a regulation describing specific water quality requirements. A TMDL is developed from a study that identifies the sources of pollution in a watershed, the contribution unclean materials from each source, and the reduction of fouled waters required to meet water quality standards. All sources of pollution are measured, including both point and nonpoint sources of pollution.
