It’s hard not to get excited about music and songwriting when you talk with Kid Pan Alley founder and artistic director Paul Reisler.
Reisler discovered years ago while working with children in rural Rappahannock County that partner' ing with their creativity and his songwriting and composing talents that great things can happen.
Ajnd they did.
With the recording of his CD Tidal Wave of Song in 2000 which featured musicians such as Linn Barnes and Allison Hampton, Cooter’s Garage Band and the Daycare Swindlers in addition to Reisler, it set off in motion a cavalcade of songs now totaling over 600 and involving over 12,000 children from all parts of the country.
“It’s pretty remarkable really,” said an ebullient Reisler as he shared his plans for an upcoming two-week residency program in Rappahannock starting the week of October 16.
Dividing his time between Wakefield County Day School, Hearthstone School and the Rappahannock County Elementary School, Reisler will be working closely with second through fifth graders to create some new songs. Set to the accompaniment of a 7-piece band, Reisler plans a January concert to showcase his and the children’s efforts.
“Imagine the excitement of writing a song and then having it performed,” beamed Reisler. “It’s transforming. They can become creators , of music.”
