If the decision is made to have a “viewing”, the casket will be open and the body of the deceased will be visible to mourners. Many grief experts believe that seeing the body helps surviving relatives and friends accept the fact of death in a most tangible manner. This paves the way for the grieving process to progress. Whether the casket is open or closed, a “visitation” involves laying the body out in a casket so that friends and family can pay their final respects to the deceased. A visitation can last for an hour or for days preceding the funeral. Depending on the family’s wishes, it can be restricted to immediate family or be open to the public.
