Among Flint Hill’s best known artisans is master blacksmith Nol Putnam. With some 30 years experience and some well-deserved fame for designing the beautiful wrong iron gates and ceremonial flower holders for the interior of the National Cathedral in Washington, Putnam’s work is highly treasured by those who have commissioned his works of art. Putnam’s creative work is in the classical European tradition and includes driveway gates, memorial gates, and balconies.
Putnam was bom in Boston, Massachusetts and attended Trinity College, Harvard University, and . the University of Massachusetts. From 1959 to 1972, he taught high school history and creative writing. But in 1973 he decided to change careers completely and became a professional blacksmith.
In his first foray into Rappahannock County, Putnam came to exhibit his small works at the 4th of July Fair in Little Washington in 1972. He was so enamored of the area that he returned a few years later, bought his first home, and has lived here permanently since 1982. His current home and studio are just a few miles north of Flint Hill near Huntly where literally hundreds of visitors came to see his work at last year’s RAAC Artists Tour.
