A lifelong native and resident of Rappahannock County, Cory Caulfield is best known for her botanical watercolors of plants and flowers. Lately, she has returned to oils as well. Like other artists of this area, Caulfield says, “I feel so blessed to five in Rappahannock County and be a part of such a vibrant art community ”
Her home and studio off Grimsley Road near Flint Hill is the perfect setting for her paintings, with flowers and woods surrounding her. This rural environment grounds her interest in botanicals, landscapes and subjects from the natural world.
Cory sold her first painting at age sixteen and then began to pursue her career in fine arts at an early age. Although she is largely self-taught, Cory has studied privately with artists in the United States, Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. She has been much influenced by American watercolorist. Winslow Homer as well as the Dutch and Flemish painters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. “I am especially inspired by the life-like detail and the deep philosophical issues these earlier great artists raise about art and its relationship to nature and life,” she said.
Much of Ms. Caulfield’s art is privately commissioned. However, she also has been represented by galleries in Washington DC., New York, Miami, Stockholm, Copenhagen and other cities. She recently was selected for several public art projects in Washington D.C. and Ocean City, MD.
