Saturday’s 73rd annual Montpelier Races in Orange County finalize Virginia’s fall steeplechase season. Just two more race dates are left on the 2007 National Steeplechase Association calendar — the Nov. 4 Pennsylvania Hunt Cup and Nov. 18 Colonial Cup in South Carolina.
NSA jockey and trainer races are tight this year, making the Nov. 3 program all the more important on a national scale. Xavier Aizpuru leads the rider division with 19 wins, but Paddy Young is within striking distance with 15, as is 2004 champion jockey Matt McCarron with 14. A big day at Montpelier, or either of the other two events, could change the standings.
