On Oct. 24, Governor Kaine approved an emergency regulation requiring health labs to report confirmed cases of methidllin-resistant staph to the Virginia Department of Health.
April Achter, an epidemiologist with the Virginia Department of Health, said at the information session last Monday that she frequently bears of staph cases from parents and schools before she bears of them from laboratories.
The department is also asking schools to report clusters of three or more methidllin-resistant staph cases, as they might indicate a common infection source. Achter said the the four cases of staph infection in Rappahannock schools this October most likely were not caused by a single source, as they occurred over a relatively long period of time.
