Just one more correct answer.
That was what Rappahannock County High School needed last Monday night against George Mason in the season-opening tournament of the 2007-08 Scholastic Bowl season at Manassas Park.
Senior Adam Gann hit the buzzer a split second before Rappahannock County junior captain A.J. Collins, gave the word, “vaccine,” as the right answer and George Mason a 190-180 win.
“We lost by 10 points,” Collins said, “but it was more like one milli-second.”
Monday night’s match between the Mustangs and the Panthers is the closest the teams played in three seasons. TTie two played each other seven times during the 2006-07 season, with George Mason winning all the matches.
The Mustangs went on to capture the Group A state championship last February.
But Monday night’s match started a new chapter in the Rappahannock-George Mason log. Rappahannock returns just one starter, Collins, from its team that finished fourth in the state last year. George Mason counters with its lone returning starter, senior captain Peter Davis.
“If we can average 220 points like we did Monday night, we’re going to win a lot of matches this season,” Rappahannock County head coach Dave Naser said. “We have new talent that is still developing.”
