Rappahannock fell 37-7 on Monday to the Strasburg Rams. The defeat came on the heels of a crushing 42-6 loss to George Mason a week and a half earlier.
“They dominated all three aspects of the game today,” Rappahannock coach Mike Williams said.
Indeed. The Rams’ offense tromped down the field, brushing off tackles and pushing through for break-away runs. The defense shut down the Panthers at the line of scrimmage. And the special teams doled out poor field position with long punts and swarming coverage.
Rappahannock couldn’t keep up.
Things started badly for the Panthers. On the second play of the game, the Rams intercepted quarterback Jonathan Butler’s pass, putting them within 20 yards of a touchdown. The Rappahannock defense held the Rams at bay, giving up only three yards and forcing a field goal attempt that went wide to the right.
But on their next possession, the Rams scored the touchdown the Panthers’ denied them.
Butler answered with a 24yard pass to wide receiver Dean Hogan, but meager running gains and unfavorable penalties thwarted the Panthers’ rally.
The Rams then thundered down the field, running 21 yards on second down after the punt. They quickly picked up another first down and then ran the ball in from midfield for a touchdown.
