HOW WE GRIEVE
According to world-renowned death-and-dying expert Elisabeth Kiibler-Ross, there are five (fishnet stages of grief: denial, followed by anger, bargaining, depression, and, finally, acceptance. In the years following the Swiss-bom psychiatrist’s death in 2004, researchers have refined Dr. Kiibler-Ross's grieving model. Using data from interviews of more that 200 grieving aAihs who lost a loved one to natural causes, researchers found that gnef begins with disbelief, followed by yearning, anger, depression and acceptance. This modified version of Kiihkr-Ross’s model shows that there is a surprisingly high, and steadily increasing, degree of acceptance throughout the grieving process. Yearning was found to be the most commonly reported psychological response to bereavement, which lasted an average of about six months.
