The Panthers had to wonder if their match against George Mason was going to be a rerun of previous competitions when they went down, 75-30, in the first toss-up round. But they put on a furious rally to keep pace at 15510 after the directed question round.
“During the first round, we were so far behind,” senior Nancy Herbert said, “I thought we were going to be pummeled again.”
Senior Alana Cloud’s answer about poet E.E. Cummings to open the last round of toss ups Rappahannock County’s going. Three consecutive rect answers from Collins and a George Mason interruption gave the Panthers a 180-175 lead.
“The 25 points that they lost on interruptions throughout the match didn’t help Mason,” Herbert added.
The Mustangs went up, 185-180, before being penalized on an interruption. That set the stage for the final question.
“Everyone in the room knew what was going on,” Herbert said. “You could see it.”
The Panthers host the Bull Run District teams Nov. 5, starting at 5 p.m.
