The commission recommended that Fletcher should be allowed 24 events per year with up to 300 guests and an unlimited number of events with up to 50 guests. Part of the commissioners’ rationale for the difference was the Miller Farm is much larger than the 175-acre Montpelier property, and therefore should be allowed more events.
The planning commission was criticized harshly on Oct. 17 for their treatment of Fletcher’s application.
“Three people up there were nothing but mouthpieces for the applicant," Stephen Komblatt, a neighboring property owner, said of the commissioners.
“I think you should be embarrassed by that," he told them after their Oct. 17 meeting. “If you’re going to serve on this commission, you need to ask real questions of the applicant and not be a mouthpiece or advocate."
Alan Zuschlag, who lives in Amissville, agreed with Komblatt. He told the commissioners he was disappointed and said they acted like advocates for Fletcher.
The commissioners will likely have to weather a similar show of disapproval if Fletcher reapplies in January.
