Officials from the Virginia Department of Health recommended old-fashioned hygiene to prevent staph infections last Monday night, speaking to an audience of about a dozen at an information session at Rappahannock County High School.
Dr. David Compton, the health director for the Rappahannock: Rapidan district, briefed the smaller-th an-expected crowd of parents, school employees and journalists on the history of antibiotic-resistant staph bacteria, and ran through ways in which parents and schools can prevent infections.
Compton said that thorough hand-washing is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of dangerous staph bacteria, which can live on a person’s skin and not just in an infected wound. And cleaning and properly bandaging staph
