Darla Purgason sits comfortably in her living room in a lovely home near Lake Rillhurst in Culpeper. On the coffee table are large binders filled with photographs chronicling her memories of life with Clancy — an Irish Setter. The tenth anniversary of Clancy’s death is this year — in October — but, for Purgason, her canine partner will always hold a spenal place in her heart.
Purgason, who has multiple sclerosis, entered a world of loneliness and despair after learning of her disability in the early 90s. She felt isolated and adrift. Determined to keep as functional as possible, Purgason took another chance at life for herself by taking on a 24/7 companion. Abandoned and finding its way to the Culpeper Animal Shelter, this cinnamon-colored canine was eventually picked up bv Larry Spivak of Irish Setter Rescue and into the hands of Darla Purgason who was convinced that he would make a perfect assistance dog for her.
