To help her with training, Purgason enlisted the aid of Amy Tester, who then had an establishment in Alexandria called Just For Dogs.
Tester remembers Purgason well. “Darla is just awesome, she’s incredible,” said Tester, who now runs Canine-Insight on Maryland’s Eastern Shore where she trains and certifies assistance dogs in hearing, mobility and seizure alert disciplines matching disabled individuals with the right dog. “When Darla first phoned me and said that she had an Irish Setter, I had my doubts,” said Tester, “Irish Setters are a very hyper-active dog with not a lot of brain cells. They’re great in the field but if you put them in a situation where they have to focus, they can be spacy.”
“I told her to bring him in and we’d do an evaluation,” said Tester who had a complete change of opinion after meeting Clancy. “He was such a star” said Tester, “he wanted so much to please her.”
