As the cost of energy continues to rise - with double-digit increase in some years - more and more people are looking for ways to reduce their energy consumption. An energy audit can identify inefficiencies in a house, recommend solutions and find opportunities for the homeowner to save money, enhance comfort, improve the home healthfulness and reduce one’s environmental footprint.
Some 20 persons gathered at The Link on Aug. 6 for a breakfast presentation sponsored by the Rappahannock Non-Profit Center.
Andrew Grisby of Commonwealth Sustainability Works in Culpeper fwww.Commonwealth Sustainability.com ) conducted an energy audit of The Link in Sperryville, the 100-year-old former Sperryville schoolhouse. Grisby presented a list of energy efficiency improvements. He also discussed how those apply to other types of buildings, especially older buildings - of which there are many in Rappahannock County.
In a slide presentation Grisby explained what the took of an energy audit are. The inspector first performs a visial inspection of the propeity (including crawlspace and a tic space) and conducts pressurkation tests of the building ind ductwork as those can be asignificant source of leakage.
He also tests the combustion efficiency of fuel-burning ippliances. He takes infrared photographs of windows, doo.'s and walls to show weak spots areas where, in winter, hot air escapes the house (or cool air steps in) and, conversely where, n summer. cool air escapes tie house or hot air comes in. Thi consultant also analyzes voir utility bills, and depending or the situation. uses an energymodeling software to estimate how suggested changes and improvements can impact ynir energy use and costs.
