of an assistance dog has become a non-issue. “Everyone’s disability is unique to them,"said Tester, “just like different breeds of dogs have different qualities. “A smaller, yappy dog might be just the right choice if you need a seizure alert companion.”
Loretta Clatterbuck at the Culpeper Animal Shelter sees a lot ,of homeless dogs. “It varies...some weeks you'll see nothing but senior dogs,” said Clatterbuck. “We recently had a little dachshund and no one wanted him because of his age. We eventually had to send him to a rescue facility. It’s really too bad because some of the smaller breeds can live a long time.”
Adopting an older dog is not for everyone. They could come with a lot of baggage but for Purgason and Clancy, the partnership was phenomenal.
“Clancy was salvation to her, they were very close,” said Tester, “he was fabulous and did so much for her. The dog was everything to her and he lived for her.”
“It was a classic case of adopting a throwaway dog and turning him into an absolute hero."
