The consensus of the Board was the DeMent hadn’t since the new structure was only 10 feet from the adjoining property rather than 50 feet and wasn’t attached to the other, existing building. (County ordinances prohibit building in flood plain areas except to restore or remodel existing structures. Without being attached to the old, burnt-out warehouse building, DeMent’s expansion wouldn’t qualify as restoration or remodeling.) Requirements Not Satisfied

Admiral Gardiner noted that a breezeway between the two buildings proposed by DeMent wouldn’t satisfy the requirement that both buildings be connected.

“I talked to him and told him you’re foolish to put one nail on the building,” interjected Zoning Administrator Evan McNear.

With the Board in agreement, Gardiner proposed that a letter be written to DeMent, informing him that his permit was suspended, pending further investigation.
