Reagan Man, Ford Man Durette had supported Reagan during last year’s pit-convention battles, *,a%d^ v Obleman had been a ford, ngan. And, of 'course, everyone knew that the conservative Reagan Reupblicans would control the 1977 conventin and thus name its nominees. Nevertheless, the scrap between Durette and Coleman was conceded to be close.
What happened is history. Canada mowed down Craigie with comparative ease while Coleman edged out Durette by less than a dozen delegate votes.
They were the simple facts but their effect will roll through the Republican Party like a tidal wave in the months to come. It would be impossible to overstate their impact.
The mere circumstance of a convention rebuffing a candidate for governor whom it had just nominated by refusing to go along with his preferred candidate for lieutenant governor is enough, alone, to insure that this convention will occupy a unique niche in the state’s political history.
